History of blackjack card game

We believe that each of you remembers the game “Twenty-One”. The Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes was the first to mention it in his stories. It appeared in France in the 18th century as “vingt-et-un” or “twenty-one”. The principle of this game is the same, although, the rules are slightly different in terms of terminology and way of counting. This game set the foundation for today’s blackjack, which has earned its name thanks to no longer existing bonus for a combination of ace of spades and a black jack.

What are the rules of blackjack?

Pravidla jsou velmi jednoduchá… Hraje se s 1 až 8 balíčky francouzských The rules are very simple… It is played with 1 to 8 decks of French cards, each containing 52 cards, no jokers. All players receive 2 cards and the dealer then offers them more. It is up to the player to take the card or not.

As the name of the predecessor (“Twenty-one”) suggests, the goal of the player is to have a higher card value than the dealer but not to exceed 21. When it exceeds it, the so-called “bust” occurs and the game ends for him. If the dealer exceeds 21 (“busts”) and the player does not; the player wins. If both of them exceed this limit, both the dealer and the player are “bust”, the dealer is preferred and the player always loses. If the number of points is the same, it is called a “push” and no one wins.

Card values:

  • The value of cards two through ten is their pip value (2 through 10)
  • Jack, Queen, and King (J, Q, K) are all worth 10
  • Aces can be worth 1 or 11.
  • It depends on the player which value to choose. When he gets 7 and Ace. The sum can be 8, but also 18 which is called “soft”. The value of the ace will become one to prevent the hand from exceeding 21. Otherwise, the hand is called “hard”.

Příklad:

7 + 10 = 17
8 + K = 8 + 10 = 18
9 + A = 9 + 11 = 20
7 + A = 7 + 11 = 18 > next card > 7 + A + 7 = 7 + 1 + 7 = 15

The dealer is significantly limited in the game; only starts playing after all the players at the table finish their game. If the dealer’s total of cards is less than 17,  he/she must always take another card. On the other hand, at a total of 17 or more, it is no longer allowed to take another card and the game ends. However, some casinos allow the dealer to continue playing and take another card at a soft total.

All blackjack wins are paid out 1: 1. When an ace and a 10 card are combined, blackjack occurs and the player usually receives a 3: 2 reward. Players who have the same number of points as the dealer will get their wager back.

The rules and payouts may vary according to the casino selected.

What are the options for the player:

Hit – Take another card from the dealer.
Stand – End of player’s turn; not to take another card.
Double – Double the wager. The dealer gives him one more card and ends the game.
Split – Split the game. If the two cards have the same value, separate them to make two hands. In addition, this will double the bet.
Surrender – Some casinos allow you to give up after the first two cards have been dealt. However, the player automatically loses half the stake.
Insurance – The player can bet that the dealer gets blackjack.
